2014 Mazda MX-5 to Return to its Roots, Get a Small-Displacement Turbocharged Engine

2003 MAZDA IBUKI CONCEPT 1

During the last two decades, most new models are bigger, safer, better equipped but also heavier than the vehicles they replace. The Mazda MX-5 is a typical example: the first generation launched in 1989 tipped the scales at just 980 kg (2,150 lb), while the current, third-generation model starts from 1,095 kg (2,410 lb).

Sure, it’s roomier and more luxurious, but it’s also more expensive and, although in no way a boring car, not quite as fun to drive as the original. In addition, you need to get the 2.0-liter engine to have the same kind of poke the original enjoyed with a 1.6-liter engine and its successor with a 1.8-liter unit.

Mazda MX 5 Super20 1

We know what you are thinking: “Didn’t Mazda unveil the MX-5 Super20 at last year’s SEMA?” Yes, they did, but they brought it back to the 2011 edition of the Las Vegas show in order to show off its new looks and color combination.

MAZDA RX 8 SPIRIT R 1

We already knew that Mazda has decided to kill-off the RX-8 four-door coupe sooner rather than later. More strict fuel economy and CO2 emission regulations saw to that, forcing the Hiroshima-based carmaker to pull it from overseas markets and keep it alive in Japan only.

Today, Mazda announced that it is launching a final special edition of its rotary-engined sports car, which will only be available in the domestic market with sales set to start on November 24. Production will be limited to 1,000 units.

Swiss Treat: Mazda MX-5 ’55 Le Mans’ Limited Edition

Mazda MX 5 55 Le Mans Limited Edition 1

In a nod to its memorable Le Mans victory in 1991, Mazda has launched a special edition version of its MX-5 roadster model in the land of smooth chocolates and punctual watches. The MX-5 ’55 Le Mans’ is named after the Mazda 787B No.55. Driven by Johnny Herbert, Volker Weidler, and Bertrand Gachot, the 787B No.55 won the 24-hours of Le Mans in 1991 claiming the first ever victory for a Japanese automobile and the rotary engine in the famed endurance race.

The limited production version of the MX-5 was created exclusively for the Swiss market and it is based on the 160HP 2.0-liter model with the 6-speed manual gearbox.

Test Drive: 2011 Mazda CX-9 AWD

2011 Mazda CX 9 AWD 1

Imagine this scenario: At the end of our 2008 Sport/Utility of the Year program, a small crew of trans-dimensional beings suddenly materialize and capture the winner, the Mazda CX-9. Search parties go out. The National Enquirer does an exposé. But of course, no one listens. The poor Mazda sits in isolated stasis.

In 2011, these beings, whom you may understandably now refer to as jerks, release the CX-9, allowing it to rejoin the automotive landscape. How would it fare in this brave new(ish) world?
